It’s been sixteen years.
That’s a really long time.
Sixteen years is how long I lived with my Mom before she died.
Sixteen years is how long I was in school.
And sixteen years is how long I’ve been married (as of tomorrow) to the greatest Husband in the whole world.
He likes me, did you know? He likes my cooking. He likes my sense of humor. He likes my taste in movies, mostly (until someone starts talking in a British accent, then he prays for something on screen to explode). He likes our kids. A lot. He likes to play with us. He likes to teach us things, to make us better, to push our limits. He likes those things around my mouth that he calls “smile marks” and I call “wrinkles” and he likes my eyelashes. He likes my writing, which is a riot, because as a general rule, he doesn’t read anything not accompanied by a cartoon drawing. He likes the trees we planted together. He likes my singing. Usually.
And I like him. I like his work ethic. I like his addiction to 5:30 a.m. basketball. I like his car fetishes (yep – more than one fetish). I like his gentleness. I like his sarcasm. I like his sincerity, too. I like his plain-colored clothes – white or black or tan or navy or maybe red, but probably not, no stripes, no plaids, no mixing colors. Collared shirts, sleeves to the elbows in summer. I like his honor. I like his integrity. I like his sense of duty. I like his faith, and his hope, and his trust. I like that his favorite treat (chocolate cake) is in no way a temptation to me. I like that he never asks to share my giant bowl of popcorn.
And I like us. We’re pretty good together. And getting better with every tomorrow.
