Olympic Preview

February 12, 2010 by becca

Okay, kids, anyone who knows me well will laugh that I’m pushing the Winter Olympics, or any sport activity, for that matter. But watch the Olympics. Specifically, here is one to watch.

Brian McKeever, a Canadian olympian, is the first person to ever compete in the Olympic games and the Paralympic games at the same time (well, one right after the other. You know what I mean.)

This guy is a cross-country skier (he already has my vote – anyone who can stay upright while strapped to two greased sticks is a hero in my book, more on skiing later) and he’s been skiing since he was three. Also, he has a genetic disorder (Stargardt disease) that has made him legally blind since he was a teenager. Specifically, he’s 90% blind. When an athlete competes in the Paralympics, he can use a guide. Brian’s brother Robin is his guide for the Para events. But in the Olympic-Olympics, no guide. So Brian has memorized the course. Memorized it. And guess what. He’s not going to win. He won’t be able to keep up with the “real contenders” in his event. But he’s going to the Olympics. Blind.

And that? Is what I call a winner. Keep your eyes on this guy. I know I will.
