Today is the first day back at school. It’s going great so far, thanks. I really like my students, and I have Goals. Plans. (Well, more ideas than plans, actually…)
I’ve decided to write down all the books I read this year. And this is a good a place to keep them as any other I can think of. So. Here’s the #1 book of January:
The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey
Wow. Kind of Big Wow. It was not an entirely comfortable read, but then again, that’s the point. Melanie’s voice, so innocent and so intellectually advanced, is stunning. There are characters to love, characters to despise, and a few that left me wondering how to feel. (This is on the short list for our Whole School Read, but I’m not sure I can vote for it. The language made me uncomfortable — the difference between a carefully-placed shocker and full-on narrative cursing.) But a very interesting look at medical ethics, waht it means to love, and–you know–zombies.

I’m glad you’re keeping track of what you read this year. I look forward to your posts since I’m always on the lookout for new books to read. This is one I haven’t gotten to yet, even though it’s been on my TBR list for forever and ever.
